Tanzania has been experiencing climate change as has the rest of the
world; however, Tanzania has been experiencing longer droughts leading to water
scarcity. This has metamorphosed into a crisis. Water being critical in
sustaining human life, its scarcity has led to numerous critical situations,
especially for young girls in schools. According to 2023, world banks report, Tanzania is reported to
experience a loss of USD $2.4 billion
yearly due to inadequate water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services.
'Maji ni Uhai Project' is therefore designed to address this challenge through advocacy, awareness development and support water purification, rainwater harvesting system and borehole construction to 10 primary schools.
In addressing water challenges affecting school children especially girls of Tanzanian communities, Partnership For Green Future (PGF) in collaboration with 350.org and Global Green Fund (GGF) celebrated international children Day by developing awareness through local media (UFM Radio) on 20th November 2023.
PGF, 350.org and GGF advocation for policy makers, school committees and community leaders of Mailimoja, Maendeleo and Muheza primary Schools of Kibaha district to prioritize water accessibility and water quality agenda to their strategic plans. Addressing school committees and community leaders, PGF Program Manager Mr. Katto mentioned water bond diseases as one of the leading problems affecting the economy of Tanzania whereas each child is said to miss 3 school days annually which is equivalent to 33,000,000 days per year.
